HOUSTON (September 6, 2009)—A state review team is investigating Texas Child Protective Services’ own abuse investigations after the deaths of three Houston-area children.
Katy infant Amber Maccurdy, 3-year-old David Tijerina, of Conroe, and 4-year-old Emma Thompson, of Spring, have died of abuse since April although all three had been reported to CPS as possible child abuse victims.
Emma and Amber died even though both were seen within weeks of their deaths by CPS investigators.
The Austin team will review a random sample of nearly 200 open cases being handled in the Houston CPS district, which includes Harris and 12 surrounding counties.

My two boys were recently removed from my care and placed with my mother. Both boys have never been abused nor neglected and CPS was called because my oldest son(14yrs.) told people in his school that I had hit him and broke his ribs and leg. Mind you that my son is LD, ADHD, ED, and has a problem telling the truth. Well I told the workers they had my permission to test my children in any way they liked and they still removed my children from my care and I am disabled and my younger son is only 4yrs. and has never been with anyone else all his life. I was told that I could only stay with them during the day supervised but I could not sleep with them. My younger son has cried every night since he was removed from my care and when I tried to contact the worker or supervisor of the problems NO ONE was available for the whole day. That is just rediculous. I cannot beleive that they did not have not one contact person in case of an emergency. This agency just doesn't care I guess.
My Ex mother in law was awarded custody of my daughter after her father was accused of sexually abusing her. This was after a year of me fighting to get CPS to step in. They told me for the whole year she was better off with her father ( whom was already a felon for assaultiong a peace officer). Shortly after the court awarded my mother in law custody she died. I didn't find this out that she died till two years later. All the while i had been attempting to get my court ordered visitation, with no answer at all. When i called them after finding out she died they told me they didn't know where my daughter was. I recently found out that my daughter has been living with the very man who raped her, her father. To make it worse, Cps refuses to press charges on him for the abuse he did to our daughter even though she could clearly testify in court. It has been five years since I first started asking them to step in, and i still havent' gotten to see my daughter. The system needs reform!
I was given temporary custody of my granddaughters in March, 2009 (temporary placement) and I was notified that the case closed on Nov. 4, 2009 until Nov. 12, 2009 via a voice mail. I should have received a written notification of release so I could change their address. I don't want to be held liable if something happens. Please email: calvina.lenzy@yahoo.com
