DALLAS (September 6, 2009)--Some North Texas school districts are trying to interpret a state law that requires public schools to incorporate Bible literacy into the curriculum.

The Legislature provided little guidance, no funding for materials or teacher training when it passed the law in 2007.

The law allows for Bible courses to be offered as an elective starting in the 2009-2010 school year and directed the State Board of Education to adopt curriculum standards that do not run afoul of the constitutional separation of church and state.

Attorney General Greg Abbott has said the course was optional, but the lessons were required.

Some school districts are offering an elective class while others are embedding Bible literacy into current classes.

Sorry Don and someone else, but since our Country and Government was founded on basic Religion, then just because some far left wingers have raised so much fuss there is a great number of you people can 'not' totally understand/comprehend the concept. This class is offered as an option, not mandatory. Again, this might be the only chance these students ever get to hear about religion.

You are correct. Our country was founded on a basic right of Freedom of Religion. That means the Bible has no place in a public school even as an elective. You are essentially forcing the Christian religion on a kid even though he/she may be of different religion or no religion at all. The irony of it is that we all know this is an attempt to teach the Christian religion to kids in public schools. One does not have to be a Christian to know right from wrong.

Separation of church and state. Bible courses are offered free of charge to anyone who wants them at their local church. As if conservatives were not crying enough about socialism we now have socialized religion in state run schools... the irony meter just exploded
