WACO (September 7, 2009)—The 44th annual Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon raised almost $260,000 in the Waco-Temple-Killeen area Monday, which is a record for local donations.

Nationally, despite the tough economy, telethon organizers said contributions and pledges from totaled nearly $60.5 million, this year, down from last year’s record $65 million.

Officials say the funds will allow the Muscular Dystrophy Association to continue funding worldwide research to find treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and related diseases and to assist families of those with neuromuscular disease.

The telethon was broadcast on 180 stations across the country, including KWTX-TV, and could also been watched on the Internet.
