SAN ANTONIO (September 8, 2009)--A rookie San Antonio police officer shot a shotgun-toting teenage robbery suspect to death early Tuesday morning after a pre-dawn gas station holdup.

A police department statement said Julio Molinar, 19, died at Brooke Army Medical Center shortly after the shooting Tuesday on Interstate 410 in northeast San Antonio.

The statement says Officer Michael Ruiz graduated from the police academy five months ago.

He was placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the police investigation.

Authorities say Ruiz drove into the parking lot of a Valero gas station around 1 a.m. Tuesday and saw Molinar running from the building.

Police said Molinar was wearing a bandanna on his face and was holding a shotgun and cash.

According to the police statement, witnesses report Ruiz ordered the man to stop and drop his weapon, but instead, Molinar pointed it at the officer, so Ruiz shot him.

I did know this boy and he wasn't a punk. He was troubled. Yes he did something wrong and no the cop wasn't acting out of line. But comments like "promote him to sereant" and "they train their rookies right" are just awful. Put yourself in his family's place. I'm sure the cop isn't as proud as you all are of him, I'm sure he's just glad to be alive.

I don't blame him, the punk pointed his gun at the officer. The officer was doing what he was supposed to be doing.
