MART (September 10, 2009)—A foggy, multi-car collision left traffic along one Central Texas highway moving at a crawl early Thursday morning.

The 6:00 a.m. collision at the intersection of TX-164 and Battle Road near Mart involved between five and seven vehicles, two of which were 18-wheelers.

The Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Cpl. Charlie Morgan said one man was taken by ambulance from the scene at Texas 164 and Battle Road in serious condition.

Two others were taken by ambulance as well but their injuries were not as bad, according to Morgan.

Names of those injured were not immediately released.

Morgan said the initial wreck involved a Ford Mustang turning onto Texas 164 from Battle road that collided with a silver Volkswagen and an dark-colored Ford SUV.

Secondarily the cars were struck by two 18-wheelers.

The Mustang sustained heavy front-end and driver-side damage while the Volkswagen sustained moderate passenger-side damage.

The driver of the Mustang was the most seriously injured.

The SUV, as well, sustained heavy front-end damage.

Sanderson Farms operated both 18-wheelers that were involved in the collision.

The tractors were taken out of service while other tractors were brought in to carry the loaded trailers.

One truck had a flattened left front tire while the other sustained damage which caused the fuel tank to leak.

Morgan said a dense fog likely contributed to the accident.

Traffic was cut down to one lane as sheriff’s officers alternated north and south bound traffic on the roadway.

Mart fire and EMS units, East Texas Medical Center ambulances, sheriff’s deputies and DPS troopers responded to the scene.

DPS officers were conducting the investigation.

I also had a wreck several years back on this road right before you get to mart/ I hit a cow head on along with another pickup. I totaled my car. No one seemed to own the cow. Thank the Good Lord I had my seat belt on. I only got a broken thumb and a bruised chess from the airbag.
