KILLEEN (September 10, 2009)--Karim Kim Gay, who held Killeen police at bay for nearly 10 hours in a standoff at a home in the 2800 block of Blue Jay Drive in a standoff that led to lockdowns at four area schools and the evacuation of the surrounding neighborhood, faces arraignment Thursday on an aggravated assault charge.

Other charges could be filed later, police said.

The standoff started just after 7:30 a.m. Wednesday after police responded to a report of gunfire in the area of Blue Jay and Starling.

As officers arrived, they learned that a woman had fallen in the street and that a man had pointed an AR15 rifle at her.

Neighbors moved the woman to safety and she was taken to Metroplex Hospital in Killeen, where she was admitted for treatment of knee injuries she suffered in the fall, police said.

The aggravated assault charge stems from that incident.

The man went back in side his residence and then a short time later, went into the backyard and fired several shots at the ground.

Officers later discovered he had killed three pet dogs.

During the standoff Wednesday, the man fired several more shots from the AR15 and from a shotgun.

No one was hurt.

The weapons and ammunition, police later discovered, had been stolen earlier Wednesday morning from a residence on Bluebonnet.

Gay surrendered just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, even as authorities were advising people who lived within a four-block radius of the standoff not to try to go to their homes.

Residents were allowed back into the area after Gay’s arrest.

A temporary shelter for those whose homes are near the scene of the standoff had been set up at the Killeen Community Center at 2201 E. Veterans Memorial Blvd. at the corner of W.S. Young and VMB.

At one point Wednesday morning, four Killeen ISD schools--Maxdale, Sugar Loaf, Palo Alto and Live Oak Ridge--were locked down, but Sugar Loaf, Palo Alto and Live Oak Ridge lifted their lockdowns at around 9 a.m.

Maxdale Elementary remained under a lockdown throughout the day and Wednesday afternoon Killeen ISD officials decided to bus the school’s 690 students from the school to the Killeen Special Events Center to ensure parents could pick up their children safely while the standoff continued.

Some parents were frustrated at the decision to move the students to the events center.

"If they have SWAT in the front and they have enough officers in the front where they have the school under control, then why not let us get our kids?" asked Eliezer Rosa.

I actually dated Karim in highschool and i wouldn't ever think him to do this kind of thing. I however am not surprised because in 10 years people can change very much. I am glad the situation got resolved without any more harm done.

I remember Karim as a friendly quiet guy in school...never in a million years did i ever think he would do something like this. my heart goes out to everyone who was affected by this terrible event and i pray for all those who talk negatively about his appearance...instead of making rude comments, thank GOD that you have a sane mind because you never know if this could ever happen to you or someone you know!
