(February 15, 2007)--America's drug czar is warning parents that their children may be getting some dangerously wrong information.
John Walters says kids are hearing from their peers online that street drugs are bad, but prescription medicines are safe.
And that's one reason why prescription drug use among teens is increasing in some cases.
According to Walters, painkillers are the most widely abused among prescribed drugs. Barbiturates and amphetamines are also popular among young people.
Walters is urging parents to take some fairly simple steps, including talking to kids about what he calls the "dangerous misinformation" they sometimes get from friends.
He also warns against leaving medicines unattended.
Sixteen-year-old Megan, a recovering drug user, says she used to get her stash from medicine cabinets in the homes of friends.
