NEW YORK (September 11, 2009)-Thousands are expected at ceremonies in New York, the Pentagon and Shanksville, Pa. to mark eight years since the Sept. 11 terror attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people.

At a park near ground zero, family members will join with volunteers who helped at the site of the fallen trade center towers to read victims' names.

Moments of silence will mark the times when the jetliners crashed into the towers and when each tower collapsed.

Vice President Joe Biden plans to attend the ceremony.

In Washington, President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates will attend a wreath laying ceremony at the Pentagon memorial.

And in the Pennsylvania field where United Flight 93 crashed, former Secretary of State Colin Powell will deliver a speech.

Across the rest of the nation, many are finding ways to help their communities.

The anniversary has been declared a national day of service.

The year 2001 should not be repeated

Today I shared videos of the September 11, 2001 attacks with my son. He was not born after the attacks occured. While watching them we discussed the importance of all the people whos lives were taken from them that day and the sadness for their families. And also how important it is to support each other through situations like this. I explained to him that I will never forget exactly what I was doing that morning and rembering how time stood still as we watched the events unfold. It is something that every American will remember. We Will Never Forget.

I remember the day so clearly from the first reports of a "small" plane hitting one of the towers, then with each subsequent news story another horrendous story or picture. I remember seeing images on TV showing paper & ash flying around like snow, & wondering where it came from, because at that point the magnitude of the disaster hadn't sunk in yet. People in NY & DC hurt or dead. A hole in the PA earth with no people. I remember all airplanes being grounded & immediately getting e-mails and phone calls to pray for family and friends who were supposed to be flying that morning, and the dread as we waited to learn their fates. Locally, I remember lines at every gas pump,& some stations jacking up their prices. I was so frightened when news reports announced that there were still a couple of planes unaccounted for, knowing that Ft. Hood could be a target. When the 3rd NY building fell, we were numb and hardly noticed. It was another disaster in a day filled with disasters.
