AUSTIN (September 12, 2009)--A proposal for a new social studies curriculum for Texas public schools would remove the word "Christmas" from a sixth-grade lesson, and that’s riling up conservatives, who call it another battle in the "war" against the Christian holiday.
Jonathan Saenz, a lobbyist for the conservative Free Market Foundation, said it’s "outrageous that the war on Christmas continues in our state and in our nation."
He contends removing "Christmas" from the curriculum is an "effort to mislead students about current society."
The draft proposal the State Board of Education is considering would remove the word “Christmas” from a section on culture that now instructs students to explain the significance of religious holidays such as Christmas, Easter, Ramadan, Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.
The proposal deletes Christmas and adds Diwali, a Hindu festival.

Students are taught tolerance. Most of the conflicts in the world is due to lack of tolerance towards other groups. If students are not taught about other groups then it will result in conflicts. Remember WW I WW II, Bosnia Herzegovina, the serbs, the middle east. Think about it do we want wars and conflicts. Of course not then lets teach about other groups. Remember teach is different than preach.
Well if a person does not want to follow Christian Teachings thats fine but leave Christians with their believes. Now Jehovahs dont believe in any thing only in giving to the organization their money and its fine. Maybe they should convert to Islam. But led everyone else celebrate Jesus birth and other celebrations, and the date is not important is the meaning behind it, is symbolic. For example, I dont really know when my mom was born. Because in Mexico peoples birth date would be the day they were registered. Does that mean he was born at that time not. Do we celebrate my moms birthdate yes we do. The date does not matter. Is a time when Jesus the savior was born a time of joy. And if we believe in him then we'll understand his almighty and wouldnt mind.
First of all, is not about separation of church and State. In Social Studies students are taught about different cultures, ethnic groups, religions etc,.. etc,. You can't teach social studies without teaching about different cultures (religions.) This brings tolerance to our nation. If we become ethnocentric we would be selfish and ignorant. We have to learn about different people around the world after all we're going glabal. TOLERANCE is the key word. Christmas is part of a culture, not only for one group in the world, but to many groups, there are over 2 billions Christians. Students are also taught Hinduism, Judaism, Islam, Budhism, and animism. If we dont teach about christianity and the other major religions, which is an aspect of Social Studies, then their will be wars, conflicts, chaos. The major wars and conflicts in the world are because of religious differences, lack of tolerance. So then should we teach tolerance? Think about what might happen if we are not telerant.
