HILLSBORO (September 17, 2009)—Hill College basketball players Eddie Brown, 18, of Vancouver, Wash. and Kenny Gregory Kirkland, 18, of Newark, N.J. posted bond and were released from the Hill County Jail Thursday where they had been held since they were charged in connection with the alleged rape of a coed Monday night in a campus dorm room.

Monterale Clark, 20, of Milwaukee, Wis. remained in custody Thursday in lieu of $50,000 bond.

He and Brown were both charged with sexual assault in the alleged attack.

Kirkland was charged with tampering with evidence.

His bond was set at $10,000.

According to the affidavits released Wednesday, the victim, whose name was not released, was attending a party Monday night in the room of Hill College basketball player Chris Kupet in Bailey Hall, a 136-bed facility in the center of the campus.

She told officers she was “encouraged to consume a large quantity of ‘Ever Clear” liquor and Dr Pepper to the extent that she was impaired and unable to stand or walk,” the affidavit said.

At some point, three of the players in the room turned off the lights and “began kissing and grabbing her while pushing her on the bed,” the affidavit said

She told officers one player raped her and another penetrated her with a finger.

After talking to the coed, who was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center in Waco for treatment and for a forensic examination, officers detained five players including Kupet and Danny McKeown, who were later released and who were not charged, according to the affidavits.

Clark and Brown were charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault.

Kirkland was charged with tampering with evidence after he admitted to police that he had thrown the victim’s underwear in a dumpster just outside his room, according to the arrest affidavits.

Reached by phone Wednesday afternoon, Hill College President Dr. Sheryl Smith Kappus said the college is still investigating the incident.

Kappus said the college has zero-tolerance for having or consuming alcohol in college dorm rooms, and those possessing or consuming alcohol will face administrative punishments.

Kappus declined to say what if any action has been taken in response to the incident Monday.

In an e-mail to the college’s faculty and staff Tuesday afternoon, Kappus said, “The college is also intensely investigating the allegations and has taken appropriate administrative action pending further investigation. Our primary concern at this time is the safety and security of our students,” she said.

The victim was home with her family, Kappus said Tuesday.
