AUSTIN (September 20, 2009)--The Oct. 1 deadline for some Texas students to get certain vaccinations to guard against preventable diseases such as meningitis and whooping cough is rapidly approaching.

Texas Department of State Health Services officials extended the deadline on Aug.24 by more than a month after new immunization requirements led to local shortages at some health care centers, but students who haven’t received the required shots by the deadline won't be allowed to attend classes.

The extension applied to shots required for students entering kindergarten and seventh grade.

Agency spokesman Doug McBride has said most of the children enrolled in public schools have received the necessary vaccinations.

To: Parent/Teacher: My child does have all her vaccines. When I took her to the doctor, they said they couldn't believe that they were making my daughter get another shot just because it was given 5 days prior to her 1st birthday. It apparently is the schools "job" if they are having to keep up with it to remain in compliance with state policy. I did my job as a parent, making sure my child was vaccinated. The school waited 5 years to tell me the shot was given 5 days early.

It is not the schools "job" to make sure your kids have proper imminization, that would be you and your doctor, the school has a list from the state that has the required shots. You either have them or not. You should be aware of shots that your child needs. Go to the health department website.

What aggravates me is that the school waits until the last minute to tell you your child needs a vaccine. I was told my daughter had her chicken pox shot before her first birthday, so she needs another one. Apparently this wasn't an issue in Pre-K thru 3rd grade. Was the school just not doing there job the past few years????
