DALLAS (September 23, 2009)--Students throughout Texas plan rallies, presentations and petition drives Wednesday in support of a bill that would allow high school graduates either to join the military or go on to higher education as a way to become legal immigrants.
The events Wednesday are part of the nationwide Back-to-School DREAM Act Day efforts.
The Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors is intended to help those brought to the U.S. as children and educated here.
It was introduced in the Senate and House in March.
The bipartisan bill is for students who graduate high school, have a good moral character, arrived in the U.S. before turning 16 and continuously lived in the country for at least five years.
Advocates estimate more than one million undocumented immigrant young people can't obtain a driver's license or work despite their educational achievements.
