BRYAN (September 29, 2009)--A former Dallas-area minister who drove to Bryan to meet what he thought was a 13-year-old girl for sex is headed to prison.
Joe Barron was sentenced Tuesday to seven years behind bars after a plea deal reached earlier this month.
Barron must serve a quarter of the sentence before he is eligible for parole, and has to register as a sex offender for ten years after his release.
Barron, 53, was arrested in May 2008 when he came to Bryan.
Police had been chatting with Barron online, although Barron thought he was in contact with a 13-year-old girl.
In those chats, Barron agreed to meet with the teen for sex.
When he was arrested, the former minister of Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano had a webcam, condoms and a cell phone.
On that phone, police say, were text conversations similar to the one that had led him to Bryan.
Tuesday's hearing lasted less than a minute. Barron and his attorney, Billy Carter, made no statements during the proceedings.
The presiding judge was.
"I wish you the best, sir," the Judge Travis Bryan III told Barron, who was accompanied by his family.
"Thank you," Barron replied.
"This is a man who has not had any criminal history at all," said Shane Phelps, the first assistant district attorney for Brazos County.
"He's in his 50s.
“I think seven years in prison is a pretty stout sentence for him to get, and I think it's an important part of our on-going effort by the Bryan Police Department, the College Station Police Department, the District Attorney's Office to really send a strong message that we really don't care who you are. If you're soliciting minors online, you've got to go to prison in this county,” he said.
Carter said his client had come to grips with the fact that he would be serving time for his crime.
"He's going to prison. We've discussed all that," Carter said. "He's ready to do that and make the best of this what he can, and I know he will."

I totally agree with you "me". God does give us our free will and I am so gratefull this man was caught! Our children MUST be protected and I am all for these sting operations. It saddenes me that this so called man of God gives Christianity a bad rap. People like this deserve to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I was trying to say that anyone, Christian or non christian are capable of horrific sin and we must pray for God's protection and Holiness in our lives.
ed, that is an idiotic statement. this man is responsible for his actions. there are as many, or (more likely) many more, non religious vile individuals as there are religious vile individuals such as this. human beings, even those who know the true and living God still have free will and can choose to abandon what they know ~ God forces no one, not you, not me, not this man. this man is a pervert. it has nothing to do with his religion. he turned his back on God and man. blaming the faith he professed is ridiculous. thank God he was caught!
We ALL are sinners and have fallen short of God's expectations. I'm not condoning his activities at all but we as Christians need to draw near to Christ. When we turn our eyes off of Jesus, this is what happens. Everyone can find an excuse not to attend church so I guess Joe Barron will be YOUR reason. Sin will take you further than you want to go, cost you more than you want to pay and keep you longer than you want to stay. We as Christians need to pray for Holiness in our lives.
