DALLAS (September 30, 2009)--A federal judge Wednesday threw out the last remaining legal challenge to construction of a large coal-fire power plant near Waco.

Attorney Eric Groten of Sandy Creek Energy Associates L.P. said the ruling in Sandy Creek's favor means the plant near Waco will open as planned.

Environmental groups sued to stop construction of the plant, challenging its air-pollution permits and questioning whether the proper pollution control equipment was being installed.

A lawyer representing the Sierra Club and Public Citizen didn't immediately return a phone call Wednesday.

Environmentalists have for years fought against the plant and 10 other plants around the state that are either under construction or in the permitting process.

Work is well underway on the 900-megawatt Sandy Creek Coal Plant just west of Riesel.

A little more than a year ago, 18 coal plants that were proposed throughout the state, most of them in Central Texas.

Plans for many were scrapped with the sale of TXU, but the Sandy Creek Plant is expected to go online in 2012 employing roughly 100 people.

It’s expected to provide power to about 100,000 Texas homes and businesses.

Agree with Q. Wilbanks and michael. But since natural gas is at its lowest price it has been in numerous, many years, they should use it instead of coal. I really prefer Wind Turbine Generators!!!!! At least this has created jobs!!!

Good news. Now maybe we can get on with providing more electric generating capacity. Glad to see these libs finally shot down. And they wonder why we have such high electric rates!

You know everyone complains when we build new power plants and then when we have blackouts because the power grid can't support our energy use everyone points fingers at the government. o.O The fact is we need more power plants to secure the future of our power grid. We can not sustain our lifestyles without it.
