COPPERAS COVE (October 1, 2009)--After 40 years in business, Cove Ford, in Copperas Cove is no more.

The dealership quietly closed its doors for good on Wednesday.

"I think everybody's still just very surprised,” said Copperas Cove Chamber of Commerce Vice President Betty Price.

“Why? That seems to be the question. Was their decision? Was it a corporate decision?” she said.

"Cove Ford has been a part of our community for 40 years and it was kind of an icon for our city and it will be sorely missed." said Price.

Some residents were asking the same question.

"I would like to know why,” Daisy Rivera said.

"I never expected this one to close," she said.

A note on the door said the dealership is closing voluntarily and cited the struggling economy, but a manager declined to give an exact reason for the closing, citing a confidentiality clause in an agreement with the Ford Motor Co.

"We sat down with Ford and we agreed, it's probably the best thing to do, because of the economy. It was a mutual agreement," General Sales Manager Richard Love said Thursday.

"I’m very sad about the whole situation, especially for our employees," he said

"It’s devastating. I pray and hope that our staff find jobs,” he said.

I moved here when assigned to Fort Hood as my last duty station in a 25-year Army career. I lived in Cove initially, and bought a new car from the friendly, professional folks at Cove Ford. Ever since then we have had both of our cars maintained there for every service suggested under the Ford schedule. Cove Ford ALWAYS treated us like family and did the best job of mechanically maintaining our vehicles I've ever experienced. Cove Ford was not only iconic to the city for which it was named, but for my family. The passing of most businesses does not effect me much usually, but this saddens me deeply. I have no idea where I will now turn for that level of quality service and wonderful treatment. To all of you who made Cove Ford what it now was, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You were truly a quality organization, and landmark like Mel's.

Yes Marie the "profit" from the sell of a foreign cars does go out of country. But think about all of the money that stays here. There are component suppliers, employees, people building the plants, people maintaining the robotics (which the UAW stronly opposes) all of that money stays here. I drive a Ford that say made in Mexico, most of the components were made down there as well, so my money went to Mexican suppliers, Mexican employees and Mexican contractors. The "profit" that was left over went to Detroit for attorney fees to fight the UAW.............Now to better serve this country which one do you think I should have purchased?????

A month ago they had on their billboard outside their business "40 years and going strong" What happened in a months time? I am not happy because it would of been nice had they sent a note to their long time customers like myself prior to closing. I am hoping another dealership will come in at some point and yes I agree with Ray we are losing our hometown feel here. The Cove Theater is going out as well.
