TROY (October 3, 2009)—A section of Interstate 35 in Troy will be shut down temporarily early Sunday morning while Troy police and Department of Public Safety investigators reconstruct a bizarre accident that claimed the lives of a female Texas National Guard soldier and two men.
National Guard soldier Alpha Gibson, 21, of DeSoto was driving a military Humvee south on the highway on Sept. 23 when the vehicle jumped the median barrier and crashed into a northbound Toyota Corolla.
Gibson died, as did the driver of the Toyota, whom police identified Wednesday evening as Douglas Ashcroft, 41 of Austin.
Donald Johnson, 44, of Burleson, was killed when his northbound 18-wheeler jackknifed as he tried to avoid the Humvee and the passenger car.
Beginning at 7 a.m. Sunday, investigators will block the southbound lanes of the interstate at mile marker 308 and then will move to the northbound lanes.
Authorities hope the findings will shed some light on the cause of the accident.
The military is conducting its own investigation, police said, and is looking into whether a mechanical failure in the Humvee could have caused the deadly chain reaction crash.
