AUSTIN (October 6, 2009)--The Texas Department of Transportation is pulling the last plug on the Trans-Texas Corridor, Gov. Rick Perry's ambitious, but embattled plan to build a toll-road network across the state.
The agency said earlier this year it was scaling the project down and now, transportation officials say it's dead.
Transportation Commissioner Bill Meadows broke the news to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, transportation officials plan to announce they've selected the "no build" option for part of the corridor that was to parallel Interstate 35.
The development contract with a private company is being terminated.
This recommendation by TxDOT will effectively end efforts to develop TTC-35 through the Trans-Texas Corridor concept,” TxDOT’s announcement of Wednesday’s news conference said.
“Interstate 35 has long been recognized as one of the state’s most congested highways, delaying travel for motorists and freight. The TTC concept was introduced in 2001 as a strategy to address congestion. In January 2009, officials with TxDOT announced that the TTC concept was being set aside. Wednesday, TxDOT officials will explain the final steps in the TTC-35 environmental review process and outline the department’s path forward,” the announcement said.
The news comes a day after Perry's Republican primary opponent, Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, got the endorsement of the Texas Farm Bureau, which has been a vocal opponent of the corridor.

Decideded not to build the portion of the corridor that would have paralleled Interstate 35? what exactly does that mean? Is there another project in the works? Should we be celebrating or scared they are gonna take my land anyways?
Although Perry was suppossed(?) to have made improvements to protect property owners from Imminent Domain Laws. I'll go with John: Salado. It's just not right to be able to force Land Owners to basically have to give up their property. NOT RIGHT!! And like some of you say, It 'will' happen again!!
The Trans Texas Corridor is not the root of the problem. Eminent Domain is the real root of the problem and needs to be taken off the law books right now. Projects like the TTC will keep surfacing as long as Eminent Domain exists! The State of Texas claims they don't have the money to fix or widen roads, but they will find the money to buy land at dirt cheap prices as long as Eminent Domain exists.
