WACO (October 13, 2009)—American Eagle flight 5146 en route from San Angelo To Dallas Fort Worth International Airport made an emergency landing Tuesday morning at Waco Regional Airport after the plane’s windshield cracked.
The pilot of the ATR-72 declared an in-flight emergency at 7:55 a.m., due to a crack in the windshield, according to Lynn Lundsford, of the Federal Aviation Administration regional office in Ft. Worth.
Lundsford said the flight was scheduled to land in Dallas at 8:45 a.m.
Lundsford also said such incidents are not uncommon because the plane’s windshield is heated to help prevent fogging and icing and when even the slightest imperfection exists, the heating can cause cracking.
It is FAA policy to immediately land an aircraft when such a crack occurs.
Fire crews stood by as the plane landed without incident.
None of the 41 people aboard was injured.
The plane was taken out of service until the windshield can be repaired.
The passengers were rebooked on other flights out of Waco.
Latest Comments
Oh I read it correctly. Just forgot when I was typing my comment. San Angelo is still southwest of here, so Waco is still probably in the flight path. Based on the comments I see on most of these web sites, I graduated from a school with very good English teachers.
The plane must have been following a gravel truck too closely while traveling down the runway.
Man...no wonder the window broke under that kind of pressure. It was just a rock broke my winsheild.
