WASHINGTON (October 14, 2009)--An exhibit that has opened at Washington's Union Station is turning some heads.
Dozens of sculptures share a single inspiration; the Red Bull energy drink can.
They’re the winners of the Red Bull Art Of Can competition that drew 300 entries.
Fifty-six of those will be on display through Oct. 19 including a piece by the winner, Kathryn Beale of Granger, who called her work "Common Ground."
It carries a political theme with a donkey and elephant dressed in red, white and blue drinking from the same can of Red Bull.
Beale, 53, won a trip to the Art Basel modern art exhibition in Switzerland.
She worked for years as a childcare professional, but more recently has devoted her energy to art, creating a mural for a Ronald McDonald House, a life-size nativity scene and paintings and small sculptures.
This is the third year she has entered the Red Bull competition.
She won third place in the Chicago contest in 2007.
“Through participation in these events, I’ve discovered a direction for my work and have evolved into an eco artist,” Beale said.
“I love to dig through piles of objects people no longer consider valuable…I can create something visual that allows me to express my thoughts, while making a positive impact on the environment.”
She calls this year’s creation “the hardest sculpture I’ve ever made.”

KWTX, thank you for sharing some GOOD NEWS! We need more of this and less of the police blotter. Headlines lately are so ugly (long list) when scanned. We need more good news. Maybe even 2 columens....one for good news and one for bad news. :-)
