WACO (October 14, 2009)—Dr Eugene Jud, who served without pay as executive director of Waco’s Caritas help agency for 22 years, died Wednesday.
He was 95.
Jud was named to head the 11-year-old charity temporarily in 1978, and remained in the position until early 2000.
Writer Reba Campbell, in a story about the 100 things she most loves about Waco, credits Jud with bringing the rich and poor together.
“He was Waco's conscience,” Campbell wrote, “and his very presence reminded us all of his philosophy – it is a privilege, not a hardship, to share our largesse with the needy.
“Working with such a man, Caritas board members quickly learned that saying “no” to Gene Jud was practically impossible,” she wrote.
Jud was born on May 30, 1914 in Nordheim.
Services were pending Wednesday at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey funeral home in Waco.

amen jimmy!
I covered Caritas for many years at the newspaper. I saw this man in action and admired him very much. At a time when most people his age would have retired, Dr. Gene Jud was truly the moving force behind this agency. He brought Caritas into the forefront in the battle against poverty. I will always miss his smiles and hugs and his gentle humor. He was a fine Christian man who did a lot of good for many, many people in need. He truly loved his work and the people he served.
I couldn't agree more with Jimmy's comments. These people are the heroes of our society. It's sad that the media so rarely covers stories about the people who do so much for others. May Dr Jud rest in peace.
