(March 13, 2007)--Some Texas lawmakers want to make it easier for Texas homeowners to power their homes with solar power.

Proposed legislation would create the TexSun Solar Energy Rebate Program, funded by a 65-cent fee on utility bills.

The measure would give rebates to customers to offset the initial cost of installing solar electric power.

Those who do would also get credit for surplus energy they produce from the solar panels.

If they produce more energy than they use, consumers get a credit on that month’s electricity bill for the energy they produced.

"With Texas sky-high utility bills and the threat of global climate change, our state needs to make an investment in solar power," said Democratic Rep. Garnet Coleman, who filed the legislation.

Coleman said the State Energy Conservation Office has called Texas the best solar source in the nation.

"Texans know how the sun beats down on them - why not put that to good use?" Coleman said.

Sen. Rodney Ellis filed a companion bill in the Senate.
