(March 14, 2007)--Pentagon officials are trying to figure out why the Navy temporarily lost communications with one of its nuclear submarines off the coast of Jacksonville, Fla. Wednesday morning.
Navy officials say that communications between the USS San Juan, a Los Angeles class sub, and the Navy were re-established early Wednesday morning.
But initially the sub was thought lost and a search and rescue was launched.
Navy spokesman Phil McGuinn says units of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group saw a red flare in the vicinity of the missing submarine Tuesday night.
Ships and aircraft immediately started searching the area where the submarine was operating and also contacted the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office in Norfolk, Va., to assist with the efforts.
Family members also were notified.
But now officials say there are no problems with the San Juan and investigators are trying to figure out what caused the communication lag.
The USS San Juan is based in Groton, Conn.
