Powell plans to retire on May 31, although he will continue to serve as a special assistant to the new dean, who is now the associate dean for academic affairs and the William B. Hinson Professor of Christian Scriptures.
Powell, a former president of both the Baptist General Convention of Texas and the Baylor Board of Regents, was named dean of the seminary in February 2001.
Since then the seminary’s enrollment has more than doubled to 381 students and its endowment has increased to more than $38 million, the university said.
“I would say of Paul Powell what (former Houston Oilers football coach) Bum Phillips once said about Earl Campbell: ‘He might not be in a class by himself, but it surely doesn’t take long to call the roll,’” said Dr. Randall O’Brien, provost and executive vice president.
“Paul Powell has carved his name into the Baylor University Hall of Fame, where he will stand forever as a giant on the George W. Truett Seminary landscape. There are a lot of great Texas Baptists, but there is only one Paul Powell.”
Garland joined the seminary faculty in 1997 as professor of Christian scriptures and was appointed to the Hinson Chair in 2005.
He taught at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary for more than 20 years before coming to Baylor.
