KILLEEN (October 26, 2009)—Joseph Duane Franklin, 27, who twice eluded officers in Killeen and Fort Hood who tried to stop him after he was reported to be suicidal and then later shot himself in the parking lot of a Killeen church has died, police said Monday.

Franklin was pronounced dead just before 7:45 a.m. Sunday, police said.

Killeen police received a report at about 1 p.m. Saturday that Franklin, who was driving a black Ford 500, was threatening to kill himself.

Thirty minutes later, an officer spotted the car in the area of Clear Creek Road, but Franklin was able to get away before she could stop him, police said.

At 2:15 p.m., a game warden on Fort Hood made another attempt to stop the vehicle, but Franklin driver again managed to elude authorities.

Forty-five minutes later, at about 3 p.m. another officer spotted the car in the parking lot of the Church of the Nazarene in the 900 block of Stagecoach Road, police said.

As he got out of his patrol car to check on the vehicle, he heard what sounded like a muffled gunshot, police said.

Killeen’s Tactical Response Unit was dispatched to the scene and after attempts to make contact with the driver officers approached and discovered that Franklin had shot himself once in the head, but that he was still breathing.

Franklin was taken first to Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center and then was flown to Scott & White Hospital in Temple where he died Sunday morning.

No one was at the church at the time of the incident, according to a statement issued by Associate Pastor Matt Thompson, who said, “Our hearts and prayers go out to the gentleman involved and his family.”

Vehicles that were parked in the church’s lot belonged to sponsors who accompanied children who went to an out-of-town event in a church van, Thompson said.

Plans were made to drop the children off at their homes, Thompson said.

Despite what Shinelle says we do have educated ppl in out family. He was therapist, nurses, psychiatrist and ppl training to be a therapist, hell I'm one of them. and despite who u r whether family or friend we are not judgemental, we wouldn't have chosen that field if we were. I am just soooo disappointed he felt like b/c one or two ppl hurt him from the family that he couldn't talk to us. I loved my brother and I know he messed up in a lot of ways hell we all do none of us r perfect but most of us can admit that, the problem comes in when ppl can't. I know what my brother did, and I was suspect about about a few other things but I also know that despite what he did, he didn't deserve to die. Any Shinelle I don't mind you speakin the truth, but I do have a problem with you doing so online for everyone to read. These effin ppl are nobodys and shouldn't be entertained despite their speculations. There is soo much I have left to say but it really doesn't matter. Shinelle you have my #

Franklin was my best friend when we used to live in Copperas Cove. He used to come to my house everyday for lunch, I gave him a ride to work every morning when his mazda 626 was broken, we hung out so much, I even took in his pitbull princess when he and Shinelle were trying to work things out but she lived in an apt and couldn't have dogs. Me and Franklin had a falling out before I got myself out of the Army. I miss him though. I know he loved Shinelle so much, all he would talk about is wanting to start a family... I havent heard from himn since, October 2003, he had no children at the time... I had no idea what was going on in his life after that... I wish i did... Maybe I could of been one more person he needed to talk to...Maybe I could of helped... RIP Franky.... I miss you dogg.
