(March 21, 2007)—Funeral services were late Wednesday morning in El Campo for slain Texas game warden Justin Hurst.
Hurst was shot to death Saturday after a high-speed chase involving a man suspected of illegally hunting from the road.
Saturday was Hurst’s 34th birthday.
A complaint charging capital murder was filed against James Freeman, 26, who was injured in the gunfight.
According to the DPS, Freeman led Hurst and another warden, along with deputies from the Wharton County Sheriff's Department, on a chase that started when one of the wardens tried to stop him on suspicion of hunting illegally from a roadside.
A spokesman for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department says 16 game wardens have been killed in the line of duty since 1919.
Wharton County is southwest of Houston.
