Leader Of Radical Islamic Group Dies In Shootout With Federal Agents

DETROIT (October 29, 2009)--The leader of a radical Sunni Islam group in Michigan has been killed in a shootout with federal agents in a warehouse in suburban Detroit, officials said.

Prosecutors said the agents were trying to arrest Luqman Ameen Abdullah on charges that included illegal possession and sale of firearms.

An FBI official said Abdullah refused to surrender, fired a weapon, and was killed when agents returned fire.

Authorities also conducted raids elsewhere to try to round up 10 followers named in a federal complaint.

Documents say Abdullah was "advocating and encouraging his followers to commit violent acts against the United States," but terrorism charges had not been filed.

Abdullah's group believes that a Muslim convert and veteran of the black power movement once known as H. Rap Brown would control a separate Islamic state in the U.S.

He's serving a life sentence in a federal prison for shooting two police officers in Georgia in 2000.

The U.S. attorney's office said an FBI dog was killed during the shootout.
