Lawmakers Introduce Bills Aimed At Human Trafficking Save Email Print

(March 28, 2007)--Two state lawmakers hope to crack down on sex slavery and indentured servitude by teaching police officers and prosecutors how to tackle such tough cases.

State Senator Leticia Van de Putte of San Antonio and state Representative Senfronia Thompson of Houston say Texas is a major hub for human trafficking.

Proposals from the two Democrats would offer grants to help prosecutors pursue convictions and
require police officers to receive training on Texas' human trafficking laws.

Federal officials say 14,000 to 18,000 victims are trafficked into the United States each year, mainly from Asia, Central and South America and Eastern Europe.

Many are forced into prostitution, while others end up in sweatshop factories or other indentured servitude.

The Texas Association Against Sexual Assault says about 20 percent of the total number of identified trafficking victims nationwide have been found in Texas.

Texas adopted a law against human trafficking in 2003, but Van de Putte says no one has been successfully prosecuted under it.
