INDIANAPOLIS (October 30, 2009)-The family and pastor of a Texas teen are keeping watch over him at the Indianapolis hospital where he has spent the past week after falling three floors from a mall escalator.
The Indianapolis Star says Phillip Caler, 16, of Booker, is in a coma and on a respirator to help him breathe.
Caler suffered brain damage, six fractured vertebrae, a broken shoulder blade, a fractured pelvis and fractured eye socket in the Oct. 22 fall at Circle Center Mall.
Caler was attending a convention of the National FFA Organization when he apparently lost his balance sitting on the escalator railing and fell 41 feet.
The teen's parents and 13- and 10-year-old sisters are keeping a vigil at the hospital.
Pastor Bobby Smith says he and the family "pretty much pray nonstop."

I was hoping by now the media would have the story straight. Phillip was not sitting on the railing, but was pulled by the moving rail when his clothing made contact. He was lifted up, straddled the rail, and then fell to the first floor. It is pertinent to have the details before making accusations. We continue to pray for Phillip.
A little common sense goes along way in any situation. The world can't build a plastic bubble for all of us to live in. Accidents happen. However, I'm sorry that this has happened. I hope and pray he will recover.
I am sorry this kid fell and hope for at least some recovery. A 41-foot fall is generally not survivable. I guess the parents will sue the mall, and they will have to replace the rails with tall fencing. Sound familiar?
