Mom And Cranky Toddler Booted From Southwest Flight
A woman who was booted along with her screaming toddler from a Southwest Airlines flight says she wants an apology.

I find it interesting that you choose to compare me to dysfunctional parents when you have no idea how well behaved my children are. Here’s the problem with your post, you ASSUME that there's more to the story than written. I’m basing my opinion on what has been written, not what I assume happened. There may or may not be more to it. Given the media’s ability to report at times, it may have been a dog & a clown on the plane. I never once said that the passengers should have to endure a screaming brat. I simply was saying I didn't think a child yelling, “Go, plane, go!” was describing a child that was a “screaming brat”. I guess our definitions of a well-behaved child are different. As far as your children “ALWAYS” behaving in public, I’m really glad for you because it seems like having perfect children is important to you. My children typically behave in public, too. And when they do not, I remove them from that situation and we work on better behavior for the next time. [ Report Abuse ]

Hey, the kid is two. That's what happens at that age. You don't remember how you were at that age. Enjoy, it's part of growing up. Realize it will be over when the kid is older. Disipline the child then [ Report Abuse ]

you people are so ignorant. obviously you all have no idea what it is like to have a 2 year old. it is the most difficult stage of thier lifetime! "no" means nothing to them, and spankings mean even lesss, she had somewhere to be, so shes supposed to BEAT her kid to shut up? come on.. if she did beat the kid you all would be complaining that she was a bad mom for hitting him. kids are hard to deal with sometimes and its not her fault. theres absolutely no reason for her to be treated this way [ Report Abuse ]

Just as society will not forever tolerate a rebellious lawbreaker, which forces us to conform to and comply with the laws of our land, so must small children somehow be taught that their are limits to what people are willing to take. One of our job as parents is to help our children understand what is appropriate behavior and another is to insist (even discipline by spanking if need be) that they conform to those standards that are reasonable for their age and understanding. There are easily identifiable differences in childhood irresponsibility and rebellion. You punish rebellion, not childhood irresponsibility. Spank your children if you love them and spare them much mental anguish as they age. As far as Obama, I believe the relevance would be to the party he represents, and in a word "entitlement". We are entitled to share a land and to live together in a manner that is acceptable to all. We are not entitled to receive something for nothing, or something unwillfully given. [ Report Abuse ]

Thank you Southwest! There is nothing worse than being captive in a public place where someone's child is throwing a tantrum and the parent can't or won't take steps to control that behavior. Parents who teach their children that they are the center of the universe & cater to their every whim aren't doing the children a favor. That leads ultimately to criminal behavior, because they were never given any discipline or structure-just the "I want, give me where's mine" attitude of many of today's kids. First off.. Minuteman.. Get a life! I have been on over 20 flights between Texas and the UK and I have seen some children misbehave or cry cause they were scared. This child yelling Go Plane Go was not out of line. If this was out of line for the kid.. Then maybe I should have claimed compensation for a teenager that was sitting next to me on a flight from DFW to Gatwick who had diareha and had to get up every 20 mins...lol. I think Southwest Airlines owes this woman an apology and maybe a free flight and hotel for her and her son. No money. Just a flight. [ Report Abuse ]

Sounds like something is missing on this story. A 2-year-old talking loud is nothing new. If that is all the kid was doing, I think Southwest was a little premature in taking them off the plane. Anyone knows who has been around kids that age, that if you spank them they cry worse than they were acting before. The reason parents started thinking that kids had to be entertained instead of being disciplined is because of today's panic-stricken society. If the mother had disciplined her kid, the article would have then read "Woman thrown off plane for spanking her kid's hand. Mother arrested for child abuse." One would think that the baby boomers would have been better parents. Turns out, they are worse than their parents ever were. [ Report Abuse ]

I feel they should control there children are find other means of travel; I did not pay good money to fly to have an incompetent, unwilling parent refuse to take charge of the situation. I have perosnally traveled on international flights where the parents allowed children that were spoiled to run free scream and make everyones else miserable. I think more Airlines ought to do this. To Anonymous....I don't care what kind of courses you taught, you are still just as ignorant as the rest of the dysfunctional parents. I am SURE it was not just a "GO PLANE GO", I am sure there was ALOT more to it then that. I have also raised two children and I can guarantee that when I got on a plane or if I am out in public, my children will ALWAYS act appropriately. No tantrums, no screaming and I do not discipline my children with spankings or yelling...seems like my major in psychology and the fact that I have two well behaved children and the fact that you think it is not a problem that other passengers on the flight should have to endure a screaming brat makes you DISQUALIFIED in my book! I can not believe how insensitive and judgmental people are these days. Air travel is more popular now and more people are flying, where in the past, this was not as common. Toddlers are reacting to their environment and are overstimulated. We can not expect all children to sit there like drones and be complete angels. Give me a break guys. Get some courtesy and offer help to the mother instead of bickering a a cold shoulder. [ Report Abuse ]

I'm sorry...I guess I just fail to see what part of his behavior was as horrible as many of the comments seem to imply. So he was yelling, "Go, plan, go!". Seriously...you want his mother to spank him for this? This is normal childhood behavior. If you think you should beat your two year old into better behavior than this I hope you don't have any children. And before anyone questions my opinion, I have 2 young children and have taught education courses at the college level for many years. Somewhere along the way parents started thinking kids had to be entertained instead of disciplined. Yes, I was a child once but I knew better then to behave badly, especially in public. No, my parents didn't beat us into submission. My mother could do it all with one look, ha-ha. We just knew better then to try her. Just to let the young parents of today know....we don't find your childrens tantrums amusing, I personally could care less about your child being able to express himself freely, not when they're driving everyone around them crazy. I realize that flying with young kids isn't always gonna be the perfect flight or even quiet flight at that, but I know that having young cousins and all... their not gonna always be quiet when you tell them too. I mean as far as SouthWest Airlines kicking them off, maybe they needed to have a quieter flight and the mom should have handled her son more better. I mean I realize the kid is ready for the plane to take off and to go see daddy, but why didn't you try calming down the kid before the flight and not wait til the flight is soon to take off. I know that me being one who doesn't always fly and I flew about 2 years ago, and trust me I was nervous because I hadn't flown in forever,and I wanted the flight to go well and I know for a fact that I dont want to hear annoying little kids screaming and make noises when the plane is gonna take off or anything. I don't blame the airline for kicking them off the plane. Why should they risk losing customers who might not book flights with them in the future if they can't get an inconsiderate passenger to take control of their kid. I know someone who had to fly overseas and he didn't get a wink of sleep on his 15 hour flight because of a pack or rowdy kids behind him. Can parents not think ahead and plan for keeping their kids entertained and busy during a long trip. Geez, this kids wasn't even off the ground yet and was out of control. I can't imagine what it would've been like after he got bored! Parents need to get control of their kids! [ Report Abuse ]

Hey Meg, if I had acted like that I'd gotten my fanny whipped. This is what's wrong with parents today..they won't discipline their kids. Good for the crew. I feel sorry for the mother to have to deal with this situation, but I also see the the point that southwest made. Parents often don't realize that there is a way to have a happy child AND make flying a happy experience for EVERYONE! May God help us in teaching our children. [ Report Abuse ]

Way to go, Southwest Airlines! I can't stand it when parents wont take control of a screaming, tantrum-throwing toddler at public places such as stores, restaurants and airports. Were this people ever children or did they ever have a child or grandchild 2 yr old children are usually cranky why boot them off there is some sick folks in this world people should stop flying southwest if they're going to react to children that way. I know how hard it is to fly with a toddler. I am so sorry to this woman and her child for the way they were treating. People fail to forget they were once children and probably acted much worse than this toddler was. The least this family deserves is an apology. Shame on you Southwest. This is typical thinking for today's world: "I can't control my child, so all of you people will just have to suffer in silence." I've been on many flights where children AND adults made the entire flight a living hell for everyone else on the plane. Get over it. This is a child. He may be out of his comfort zone and it can be scarry and it may be irritating to his little ears being 35000 feet in the air. We have all heard of the screaming kid on the plane before and you take that chance when you board a flight. We all have a right to be on that flight. Maybe they should have a flight for uptight, intolerant passengers. I am a mother of 4 children. You know sometimes, they have a mind of their own and no amount of games or activities calm them down.It has nothing to do with dicipline. Your hands are for loving, not spanking.In fact it would be cruel to spank a child because he is scared or cannot adjust to changes in the air. I suggest next time you get on a plane, take some head phones or a sedative.

I was stuck on a flight from Atlanta to Chicago with JASON, THE CHILD FROM HELL. By the time the flight landed everyone on there was more than willing to take the fall for killing his incompetant mother. I feel bad for the woman and her child, but it examples like the one above that make it harder for everyone to fly. Flying in and of itself is a stressful situation, what with security, long lines, being away from home. You do NOt need a simpering uneffective mother allowing her precious 2 year old to run roughshot over the entire flight. Its not like the oter passengers can get up and leave the room. Maybe airlines can have flights just for families with small children. I guarantee you, they wouldnt even want to fly with each other after the maiden trip.

I am a parent and a grandparent of 4 little ones under 4. Airlines run a business, and the business has to act in best interest of all. It is not cute or funny to be inside a small spcae with a child screaming, just to scream. The mother would be at fault to not have taken into account she needed to discipline the child and have activities for the child. She should take the reposibility. As for comments by "priscilla" it is not unfortunate that some still support physical discipline. Discipline is not beating or torturing a child, howvever, it a child is to be disciplined in a loving and responsible manner. What is really unfortunate is that there are parents (like yourself?) who will not make their children respect authority even if that means spanking or spatting hands. Since the child was 2, the child is made to sit in their seat on flight, wear seat bealt on flight, so why not quit screaming on flight? Under 2 sit on mom or dad's lap.

As the mother of an active 2 year old boy, I feel very sorry for this mom. It is unfortunate that today, we still have folks that support physical discipline. I am also surprise at the airlines' intolerance to childhood behavior - I refuse to believe that the commentors who supported Southwest's action never threw a tantrum in public atleast once. As a parent, I travel long-distance frequently, and there are times when my child has difficulty tolerating the last 15-20 mins of the flight. I have no other means of travel except air-travel and I cant imagine how difficult it would if the airline staff also acted intolerant and childish. Children do not act out on purpose- they are innocent. The adults around them in the situation are the ones who are malicious. Airlines should work on handling these types of spiteful adult passengers. Southwest needs to also make it mandatory that flight staff get regular psychological evaluations.

I guess you still do not get it so yes dysfunctional is a word to use. I was not reading more into it only knowing that a 2 year old was not just saying, "GO PLANE GO" and "I WANT DADDY." I am sure there were other audible noises to include screaming and crying that 2 year olds are capable of emitting which makes for a "screaming brat!" I guess the real difference is that your children "TYPICALLY" behave in public where as mine "ALWAYS" do and removing them from the situation and working on better behavior NEXT TIME? Yes the mother and her child were removed from the situation so NEXT TIME maybe they can take drive and work on better behavior! As far as it being important that my children are perfect? It is VERY important that my children act appropriately and do not offend or cause disturbance to others and they understand and know what is acceptable and what is not. It is called functional parenting and it starts from the day they are born!

If you would read other news stories about this, it explains that the child was screaming so loudly that the crew could not give their pre-flight instructions. They have since apologized and given the mother a $300 voucher. As a parent who has had children on many flights including overseas flights, the crew was within their rights to ask her to leave. It seems as though this mother thinks her child was being funny and cute but that is certainly not funny or cute to others. Two years old can be taught right from wrong and she should have brought some distractions with her. It seems that she just felt that everyone but her should have to follow the rules.

Get some earplugs people. Also, if you are there to ENJOY your flight...you have problems. Who "enjoys" an airline flight. Have some tolerance and don't be stuck in your own world that other people displaying a hard time upset you so severely. LOL That poor mom!

"Spare the rod, spoil the child". People/Parents now days have never been, were 'never' diciplined correctly to start out with. The Old Saying; "They will grow out of it". So I'm glad Southwest returned to Amarillo, and kicked her off. No Apology necessary!! PERIOD!!

I am surprised the Airlines do not charge for screeming kids. i.e Your too big and will need to purchase another ticket, your logage is $25 dollars a bag and $90 dollars if its over 70lbs. Screeming kids extra $50 dollars. I would pay an extra $100 dollars just for a quite ride! Way to GO SouthWest!
