(April 3, 2007)--The state Senate Health and Human Services Committee has scheduled an April 10 hearing on a bill that would bar the state from adding the human papillomavirus vaccine to the list of required shots for school attendance.
The House overwhelmingly passed the bill last month, and 16 senators are co-sponsoring an identical proposal.
The vaccine, Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, protects girls and women against strains of the sexually transmitted virus that cause most cases of cervical cancer and genital warts.
In February, Gov. Rick Perry issued an order directed state health officials to require the vaccine for girls starting sixth grade as of September 2008.
Lawmakers have since said the attorney general told them Perry's order was just a ``suggestion'' that health officials could follow.
The committee also will discuss a Democratic senator's bill that would implement an HPV vaccine requirement in 2007. Sen. Leticia Van de Putte filed that proposal months before Perry issued his order.
