(April 5, 2007)—Rice walk-on basketball player Jonathan Bailey was stabbed to death early Thursday morning in College Station as he celebrated his birthday with his twin brother, who was also stabbed, but who survived the attack.
Bailey and his brother Janson were celebrating their 22nd birthday at a College Station bar when a fight broke out around 1:45 a.m. Thursday.
The Baileys and others involved in the fight were asked to leave, but the altercation continued outside where the brothers were stabbed.
They were both taken to St. Joseph Regional Health Center, where Jonathan was pronounced dead.
Janson was treated for multiple stab wounds and was in fair condition Thursday evening.
A 23-year-old College Station man was later arrested in connection with the attack.
Jonathan Bailey played in four games for Rice during the past season and scored four points in the Owl’s opener against Paul Quinn College.
Rice coach Willis Wilson met with Bailey’s mother Thursday morning in Houston.
"Obviously, we are shocked at this tragedy," Wilson said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Jonathan's family. Every member of our athletics community is grieving at the loss of a teammate and a friend."
