FORT HOOD (November 5, 2009)—Nine Killeen ISD schools on Fort Hood attended by about 2,600 students remained on lockdown for more than five hours after Thursday's shooting rampage on post.
Most of the students, who were released when the base reopened, were attending the district's seven elementary schools and two middle schools on the post.
A high school adjacent to the base also was locked down.
“The students were never in any danger and were well taken care of,” district spokeswoman Leslie Gilmore said.
She said that, as a security precaution, the students were released only to parents or guardians who could sign them out and weren't being allowed to leave by other means.
Gilmore says the district will have crisis counselors available Friday.
The Lampasas ISD, meanwhile, said buses would take students home as usual, but said if appropriate supervision wasn’t present in homes that elementary age children would be returned to their schools where parents would need to pick them up.
Central Texas College’s central campus was on lockdown until just before 5 p.m. Thursday.
The school said Fort Hood and central campus classes were canceled Thursday evening.
Texas A&M Central Texas canceled classes for the remainder of the day.
Temple ISD reports schools are on a "soft" lock down.
Temple Police Sgt. Brad hunt told News 10 police units were dispatched to all schools and Scott and White Hospital.

Jennifer, I thank you for your response, and I agree.. this is difficult for all involved and who live here on post, but primarily the most difficult for the victims and their families. My thoughts and prayers remain with them all.
Our schools on post currently have armed soldiers in full body armor in front of the doors, hummers and larger trucks in the parking areas... I witnessed this myself when I took my son to school as usual. And they wanted "normalcy" today?? There is nothing normal about armed soldiers in front of the schools and the kids are now even more frightened.. however, I am grateful that they are there to protect our children.
As a former military soldier I think you should keep the questions short and sweet and stop asking for detailed answers dealing with the miltary portion of whats going on cause there are limited answers they can give and considering what happened people are upset and don't feel like being hounded with tons of questions.
