Congress’ Approval Rating Rises

(April 10, 2007)--Democrats in Congress are marking 100 days in power with a public approval rating that's at its highest level in a year.

An Associated Press-Ipsos poll taken nationwide shows an approval rating for Congress at 40 percent.

That's up from a 25 percent approval rating in the weeks leading up to last fall's elections, when Republicans were in power.

Support of Congress is lower among independents.

Thirty-two percent of them approve of the job Congress is doing and 36 percent like the way Democrats are handling Iraq.

The poll indicates that the public wants Congress to push for an end to the war in Iraq.

Thirty-nine percent of those surveyed strongly disapprove of President Bush's handling of foreign policy and the war on terrorism.
