Former Belton Baseball Star Dies In Fall Save Email Print

Former Belton High School baseball star Bradley McGehee was atop a cliff along the Brazos River at Circle Point in Cameron Park East when the rock ledge on which he sat collapsed, Saturday.

Initial reports that McGehee was watching drag boat races from the top of the cliff were in error, Waco police said Monday.

Instead, police said they have determined that the spot was a place where McGehee and his friends liked to go. Police said he was past a protective barrier and inside a restricted area when he fell.

Drag boat racers who were in town for a weekend series that was cancelled because of the heavy rain first reported the fall, police said.

The members of the Southern Drag Boat Association who witnessed the fall immediately took their rescue boat across the river to provide emergency assistance.

Emergency crews reached McGehee by foot, but used a large deck boat furnished by the racers to evacuate the injured man.

The 20-year-old former athlete died a short time later at a Waco hospital.

At Belton High, the shortstop batted .425 with a school-record of 57 hits, eight home runs, and 35 runs batted in and 50 runs scored.

McGehee was named to the 2002 Texas Sports Writers Association all-state team.
