HOUSTON (November 10, 2009)-A South Texas man has been sentenced to more than 14 years in prison for his role in a 2003 human smuggling attempt, which became the deadliest in U.S. history.
Prosecutors say Abelardo Flores was part of a smuggling ring that packed more than 70 illegal immigrants into the back of a stifling tractor-trailer in May 2003 and tried to transport them from South Texas to Houston.
Flores had previously pleaded guilty to a smuggling conspiracy charge and was given a reduced sentence on Monday as part of a plea agreement.
The immigrants were found after the driver abandoned the trailer at a truck stop in Victoria, about 100 miles southwest of Houston.
Seventeen people were found dead in the trailer, and two others died later, all of dehydration, overheating and suffocation.

To Reason:Belton, You need to re-read what I stated. I did not put a price tag on anyones head, just stated the facts. Besides they were illegal(unlawful) and should have never been in the state. If INS had caught them, they would have been deported, only to try and return again, probably the next day.
Someone Near here-- His actions led to the loss of life of 17 Human lives! How can you put a price tag on that. Illegals or not this man is a murderer and should never see the light of day!
He made a minimum of $2,000 dollars each, which equals to $38,000, I guess he deserves 14 years in the Pen. But that is going to cost US $50,000 a year which equals to $700,000 ???
