WACO (November 11, 2009)-Veterans Day was formerly known as Armistice Day to mark the anniversary of the armistice that ended World War I in 1918.

The federal legal holiday was formerly observed on the fourth Monday in October during the mid-1970s but reverted to Nov. 11 in 1978.

In light of the tragic shooting at Fort Hood last week, this year's celebration promises to be a powerful and solemn Veterans Day.

"This year, our recognition of veterans and troops is tinged with pain as we mourn the tragic loss of life and injuries of some of our bravest at Fort Hood on November 5," Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison said in a press release late Tuesday. "Their ultimate sacrifice reminds us of how much we owe our men and women in uniform."

Happy Veterans Day everyone! My great-uncle served in the Korean War and his father served in WW1. Thank you to all our Veterans, our fallen soldiers, and those who are still serving and protecting our great country.

I pray for the wounded still in the hospital and the families of the fallen. I am a army mom of 9 years and I am a very proud mother of my 2 sons. They are my only children I have for which they both have grown into outstanding young men with their own families. They both have done an outstanding job in the ARMY and each have done their tour of duty in IRAQ. I look up to those who are serving and who have served and my heart goes to each and everyone of you and will remain in my prayers as you carry on.
