KILLEEN (November 14, 2009)—A 17-year-old student who was arrested after a handgun was found in a backpack at a charter school in Killeen was jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond after he was charged with unlawfully carrying a weapon in a public place.

Robert John Zenhye was booked into the Bell County Jail.

He was arrested after teachers found a gun and a knife at the Destiny Academy charter school in the 100 block of East Veterans Memorial Boulevard in Killeen.

The school, which has about 130 students, is a campus of the Dallas-based Honors Academy, whose president and CEO confirmed, “There was an incident with a gun and a 17-year-old youth,” but didn’t release other details.

Killeen police, however, said a teacher advised an off-duty Killeen officer who was working in the area that the student had a gun.

The officer removed the student and the bag from the classroom, police said, and the student, whose name was not released, was taken into custody.

“The teacher, student and the principal resolved the situation with no issues or incident,” Honors Academy President and CEO John Dodd said.

Killeen Police, Dodd said, “handled the matter to where no students knew it was going on.”

“It was not part of a fight, argument or any threat,” he said.

“It was just discovered.”

The incident happened at around midday Friday, Dodd said.
