KEY WEST, Fla. (November 13, 2009)--Richard McCoy, Jr., 51, of Cypress, died Friday while scuba diving near a scuttled ship that formed an artificial reef off Key West, the Monroe County, Fla. Sheriff's Office said.

The ship, the Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, is in about 140 feet of water seven miles off Key West

McCoy had flown into Miami the day before as part of an organized dive trip.

McCoy was down about 95 feet with two instructors, just after noon Friday, when he reportedly began having trouble.

The instructors began helping McCoy, but he stopped breathing about 25 feet from the surface.

CPR was started back at the boat and continued by paramedics on shore, officials said.

McCoy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A medical examiner will determine cause of death, and authorities will inspect the dive equipment.
