HUNTSVILLE (November 18, 2009)--The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles, in a rare and unusual move, recommended Wednesday that the governor commute the sentence of a convicted killer who’s scheduled to murderer Thursday.
Robert Lee Thompson was sentenced to die his part in the deadly shooting of Houston convenience store clerk 13 years ago, but the board is recommending that Gov. Rick Perry commute his sentence to life.
Thompson, 34, was sentenced under the Texas law of parties as an accomplice when Mansoor Bhai Rahim Mohammed, 29, was gunned down 13 years ago.
Under state law, all of those involved in a crime that leads to a murder share responsibility equally, regardless of the role each played in the offense.
Thompson's partner, Sammy Butler, received a life term while Thompson got a death sentence.
According to state records, Thompson and Butler were both armed and had robbed at least eight other stores.
In three of those robberies, the clerks were shot to death.

More violence (putting Thompson to death) will not stop the cycle of violence that is escalating in this country. We may have the right legally to execute offenders such as Thompson, but we do not have the right morally. We must stop future violence today by commuting Thompson's sentence.
