FORT WORTH (November 19, 2009)--American Airlines says several hundred of its flights are delayed around the country Thursday because of a problem with an Federal Aviation Administration system.
The FAA says the problem is with a system that collects from the flight plans from airlines.
Fort Worth-based American’s spokesman Tim Smith said delays are running from a few minutes to a bit more than an hour.
He said American was told the problem would be fixed soon, but Smith says "once you get behind, it tends to stay that way" throughout the day.
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest airport, was among those affected.
Passengers were being asked to check the status of their flights online before going to airports.
Only minor delays were being reported at metropolitan New York City area airports.
By 9 a.m. CST, FAA officials said the computer problem had been resolved.
The air traffic controllers union said the failure involved both of the Federal Aviation Administration's computer centers in Salt Lake City and Atlanta.
Even though the FAA said Thursday the problem had been solved, Doug Church, a spokesman for the National Air Traffic Controllers Union, said controllers were still entering flight plans manually into computers in some locations.
