(April 16, 2007)—Students used cell phone cameras and a professor used a Web cam to record vignettes of the tragedy Monday on the Virginia Tech campus, where a gunman went on a rampage that left 33 dead and more than 20 injured in the worst mass shooting in US history.

The gunman, who was among the dead, struck first in a campus dormitory where two student were shot to death and then two hours later in a classroom in the school’s engineering building, where he killed 30 before taking his own life.

One student recorded the sound of more than two-dozen gunshots from outside the engineering building.

Meanwhile Virginia Tech professor Dennis Hong used a Web camera to capture the scene during the deadly shooting and then streamed the video to his students who were locked in laboratories.

University officials used e-mail to keep students advised about the situation on campus.
