Think about this, NUNYA. The attacker knowingly attacked a presumedly uniformed peace officer. The officer is trained to respond with the appropriate level of force to protect himself and to prevent escalation. If you leave the officer no option, the responsibility lies with the party on the offensive. If you were attacked suddenly and believed your life to be in danger, would you pick one of the two options that are effective on MOST people, on the option with the 100% effective rate when properly applied. No mention of bystanders injured, so it appears that the officer applied the properly applied the appropriate amount of force. The fact that this individual will never endanger another person can only be considered a plus. My prayers are with the officer in question.

They give officers the tools they need to do their jobs. They have pepper spray, tasers, batons and firearms. It is their discretion to use whatever they feel is best for a particular situation. The grand jury will look at the evidence as it does in all shootings, plus he will get a departmental review. Time will tell. Hopefully Jesse and Al will stay out of this one, but I doubt it as it has been awhile since they were able to get their faces in front of a camera and make some money. And yes Nunya, if you attack someone, even a cop, with your hands it DOES give them the right to defend themselves, including and up to shooting you.

Dont know the whole situation and def wasnt there, but they give cops pepper spray, tasers and batons to defend themselves from ppl who dont have weapons. Did the officer try to use these things first or what? Just because you attack a cop with your hands dont give them the right to shoot you. Also, whats up with people arguing on here. Seriously?

This is not a race sissue, no matter how it is sliced and diced. This was a simple assault on a police officer, and the police officer defended himself. Get ready for the two Reverands (Al and Jesse) to come flying in the defend the perps reputation.

Should we fault a hired professional for doing what the taxpayers pay him to do? IF a child had been kidnapped, assualted, or worse by this person, then the police and ISD would have been faulted. The dead man was responsible for his actions, unfortunately they resulted in his death. Society may be better off for this.

WOW is probably a liberal democrat, always finding fault with something and missing the point. So just shut up WOW and praise this officer for fighting crime. And another thing, God bless this officer, that's right liberals I used the word God.

How long is it going to take for this to become a race issue, since the attacker was reported to be black!!!

I agree with the majority of the posters. Sometimes, it is needed to defend yourself, especially this day in age.

To WOW: Key words? The report is properly written. The "key" words are commonly used in a formal report. You are probably one of the same people that also complains when there are grammatical errors in a news story as well.

'WoW', I'm sure there is no reason the officer really had to do his job. Why is it so hard to believe a police officer had to defend himself from attack in this day and age?

Too many key words used in the report, this story smells.

To this officer: Sometimes we have to do what is necessary to protect and service and this is one of those times.
