”You Had A Hundred Billion Chances,” Virginia Tech Gunman Says In Video Tirade

(April 18, 2007)—Between the time he shot two people to death in a campus dormitory and opened fire two hours later killing 30 students and professors in an engineering building, Virginia Tech senior Cho Seung-Hui took time to mail a package of videos, photos and text to NBC in New York.

The package, containing 27 videos, 43 still photos, one audio recording and an 1800-word manifesto, arrived by regular mail Wednesday morning.

NBC, which turned the original material over to the FBI, released portions of the package’s contents Wednesday evening including portions of profanity-laced video tirades against the wealthy and hedonistic.

“I didn’t have to do this. I could have left. I could have fled. But no, I will no longer run. It’s not for me. For my children, for my brothers and sisters that you f---, I did it for them,” Cho says on one of the videos, a portion of which NBC aired.
“You had a hundred billion chances and ways to have avoided today.
“But you decided to spill my blood. You forced me into a corner and gave me only one option. The decision was yours. Now you have blood on your hands that will never wash off.”
NBC said a time stamp on the package indicates the material was mailed in the two-hour window between the first burst of gunfire and the second.

Virginia State Police Col. Steve Flaherty said, "This may be a very new, critical component of this investigation."

Flaherty says authorities are in the process of "attempting to analyze and evaluate its worth."

The material could shed some light on the motive for the worst mass shooting in US history and on what Cho did during the two hours between the first and second rampage.

It also suggests that the killings had been planned for some time.

Cho’s professors and college suitemates, meanwhile, are painting a dark portrait the 23-year-old English major.

Cho's suitemates say he rarely spoke to them or made eye contact.

They and his professors describe him as troubled and very quiet.

One of the suitemates, Karan Grewal, says no told him that his teachers were concerned about him being dangerous or suicidal.

Grewal says Cho was always alone in the dining hall, watching TV or working out in the gym.

Grewal says he pulled an all-nighter to do homework the day of the shootings and saw Cho up around 5 a.m., a few hours earlier than normal.

He says that Cho was his usually silent self.

Grewal says he had no idea Cho was capable of killing 32 people before taking his own life.
