(April 20, 2007)--Another company is recalling pet foods made with a contaminated ingredient imported from China.
Royal Canin USA says its recall involves some of its dry dog and cat foods made with tainted rice protein concentrate.
The substance is the second found in the US to be contaminated by melamine, an industrial chemical.
Previously, testing revealed that wheat gluten had been contaminated.
Royal Canin's South African unit has also recalled a range of pet food products containing a third ingredient, corn gluten, which was also found to be contaminated.
"We are as passionate about the health and happiness of our customers' pets as we are of our own, so we are committed to taking the steps necessary to ensure this never happens again," said Olivier Amice, President and CEO of Royal Canin USA.
Pet owners with questions about Royal Canin products may call 1-800-592-6687.
The importer of the rice protein has recalled all of the ingredient that it had distributed to five pet food manufacturers in the US.
Earlier this week, two companies recalled products made with the protein.
The government, meanwhile, is exploring the theory that imported ingredients in some pet food may have been intentionally spiked with an industrial chemical to make them appear to have a higher protein content.
The Food and Drug Administration is looking into how the chemical, melamine, contaminated at least two ingredients used in more than 100 brands of dog and cat food.
Melamine has been found in both wheat gluten and rice protein concentrate imported from China.
A California hog farm has been quarantined after melamine was found in pig urine there.
It's believed to have come from rice protein concentrate imported from China.
So far, state officials say there is "minimal health risk" to anyone who has eaten pork from American Hog Farm in Stanislaus County.
