(April 24, 2007)--Authorities say mobile homes overturned and ambulances picked up the injured Tuesday night as severe storms swept near the small town of Eagle Pass near the Mexico border.

Strong winds, heavy rain and tornadoes were reported throughout the state Tuesday.

In North Texas, as many as 16,000 customers lost power as winds knocked down utility poles.

Eagle Pass authorities say they're surveying the area to assess the injuries and damage after an apparent tornado touched down.

City fire marshal Arturo Garcia says at least several mobile homes toppled in the strong winds.

Across the border in Piedras Negras, Mexico, authorities say at least three people were killed and at least 40 were injured in the severe weather.

In North Texas, streets flooded and roofs peeled off homes as storms began moving through Tuesday afternoon.

Tornado sirens rang in several counties, and television footage showed drivers and residents being rescued from flooded cars and suburban neighborhoods.

About 4,000 customers in North Texas remained without electricity late Tuesday after about four times that many lost power earlier in the day, said Gailee Cardwell, a spokeswoman for Oncor Electric Delivery.
In Denton County, heavy winds blew the metal roof off a restaurant and damaged several mobile homes and a commercial building under construction.

A tornado watch remained in effect until 11 p.m. for much of Central Texas and a flash flood watch remains in effect through Wednesday morning as the atmosphere remains unstable and heavy rainfall remains a possibility.
