The car-bombing Friday near the Marine’s camp in Fallujah that left two U.S. Marines dead and six others injured came a day after a car-bombing south of Baghdad that killed eight U.S. troops.
Marines in the tense city are in the process of turning over some positions in the tense city to members of an Iraqi security force.
Brigadier Gen. Mark Kimmitt told reporters that Marines are training what he calls the first
battalion of the Fallujah Brigade, a security force made up of
Iraqis.
He said some members of that force have taken over certain
Marine positions around Fallujah. But he said the Iraqis will be
working closely with the Americans and will be under American
command for now.
Kimmitt also indicates the Marines will be monitoring the Iraqis
to make sure they're doing their jobs. He says the Marines also
plan to let families who fled the insurgency in Fallujah back in as
order is restored.
