(May 2, 2007)--The Alamo would get a new nearby educational building under plans offered Wednesday to upgrade one of the state's most famous historic sites.
TV studios for producing Alamo education programs, a new library, a 250-seat auditorium and a Texana book store are slated for construction across the street from the San Antonio shrine.
Nelma Toney Wilkinson with the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which oversees the Alamo with no government funding, was at the Texas Capitol Wednesday to back the plan.
The expansion of the Alamo complex, along with upkeep of the existing old Alamo church building and the Long Barrack, are to be paid for with a previously revealed fund-raising effort.
DRT says the goal is to raise $60 million within five years.
The former Spanish mission was the site of the famous 1836 battle in the Texas war for independence from Mexico.
