WACO (December 1, 2009)--A Gatesville man who was indicted in September for sexual assault of a child waived arraignment Tuesday in federal court on a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Bond was set at $50,000 for James Pat Wheat, 60, who was ordered to remain in jail until a bed is available at the Salvation Army.

In a bizarre turn of events during the hearing, one woman assaulted another woman believed to be the mother of Wheat’s victim.

Wheat's wife, Patricia Wheat, was arrested and booked Tuesday into the McLennan County Jail. She was later released on a $1,000 bond.

An attorney associated with the case told News 10 a family member reported to police that Wheat kept several firearms at his house.

The attorney said the firearms in question are antiques that were left to Wheat by his father when Wheat's father died.

Wheat was arrested in July in connection with the aggravated sexual assault of a 4-year-old Gatesville girl for whom his wife was caring, and was indicted by a Coryell County Grand Jury in September.

In that case, he was freed on $35,000 bond after his arrest.

I was married into this family until shortly before his dad died and was very close to his mom and dad until their deaths. His father did not own but maybe a couple of hunting guns, like a 12 ga. or a dbl barrel shotgun. And I think that his adopted brother may have gotten those. James stole things, from his dad before and after his death. He was a liar and a thief then. Maybe the ATF will contact his other family members to ask if those guns were his dad's. He stole fishing gear and instruments off my dad's bass boat while my dad was in hospital with heart surgery. I got some of it back when a friend in another town told me that James has swapped them to him for other stuff. Some of those guns may have even been owned by his deceased brother in law whom he stole from also.
