(May 7, 2007)--Officials say a 15-year-old boy was fatally shot by a Dallas light-rail system officer when the teen attacked another officer at a station.

Spokesman Morgan Lyons says two female Dallas Area Rapid Transit officers were patrolling the station in South Dallas early Sunday when the teen jumped from the bushes and attacked one of the officers.

The Dallas Police Department identified the victim as Bobby Walker, a high school freshman.

Dallas police investigators say the second officer fired out of self-defense, although Walker was not armed.

Dallas police Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther identified the DART officer who opened fire as Niksha Owens.

Owens and the other officer were placed on paid administrative leave.

Walker's family members have questioned whether the shooting was necessary.
