Sharpton’s Remarks About Mormon Candidate Draw Fire
A remark from the Rev. Al Sharpton that was evidently directed at Mormon presidential candidate Mitt Romney was drawing fire Wednesday.

(May 9, 2007)—The Rev. Al Sharpton has declared during a debate that Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will be defeated by "those of us who believe in God."

Sharpton insisted later that he was not questioning the faith of Romney, who is Mormon, but was contrasting himself with Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author he was debating at the time.

During Monday's debate in New York, Sharpton said, "As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that."

A spokesman for the Romney campaign said, "It is terribly disheartening and disappointing to hear Reverend Sharpton offer such appalling comments about a fellow American's faith."
